Continually experimenting with new ideas and techniques — Reconstructing, Developing, Modernising.

Confident, Competent, and Safe

I have recently started volunteering at a local food bank. So far it has been a satisfying and interesting experience. I find it interesting that it has quickly become something I look forward to doing even though it involves doing something which makes me uncomfortable: dealing with “strangers”.

I quickly discovered that I enjoy the work because of the way the volunteers work together. It seems to me that it is a safe environment to ask questions, we’re assumed to be competent, and those two factors mean that I can be confident to take on new tasks — if I goof up and realize it then I can ask, if I don’t realize then someone will most likely help me out. When I feel confident then I’m better able to treat “strangers” as the people they are, and I experience this as a big positive feedback loop.

That experience feels good to me.
